Risk the Adventure

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."
- Helen Keller

"I think it's my adventure, my trip, my journey, and I guess my attitude is, let the chips fall where they may."
- Leonard Nimoy

Some adventures we are certainly interested in taking – say a trip to an exotic, tropical island. Yet, the authors today are referring to a larger type of adventure – a life adventure. Helen Keller puts it a pretty fine point on it by connecting the danger/security facet directly to the value of the experience. Life is an adventure or nothing.

I don’t know about you but I don’t really see myself as much of an adventurous person. I know plenty of people that love to take on risky activities and savor the adrenaline rush when things get a little bit dangerous. I’m more of a “should I have 3 or 4 cups of coffee today” kind of person. Many of us really value the stability and comfort we create in our lives but all of that will mean very little if life loses its richness. What experiences and memories really define you? Maybe an adventure was part of that story.

If you learn a little more about Leonard Nimoy’s life you’ll see how his quote above is a reflection of how he led a powerful life with great heart and compassion for others. His family had encouraged him to take the safe path – they wanted him to have the stability of a good accordion player’s livelihood. Yet he chose an adventure instead. All of the “trekkies” out there are glad he did!

I’m not suggesting that you go jump out of an airplane or take up xtreme sports, but I am suggesting that taking a path in your life that entails some risk will likely result in an amazing adventure. Perhaps you meet someone new. Perhaps you take on a new work challenge. Perhaps you pick up on an adventure you never saw through. If you think about the things you’ve held back from doing in the past you might find an adventure that you’re now ready to take on!

Where will your adventure take you next?
